Then we have the armpit carrier, the dude next door that sets out to impress every Sunday morning. He showers, dresses, put's his bible under his arm and off he swaggers to his local parish - This is great,
But better still is to carry it in your heart. No need to dust it off, pick it up, find a reference - it's plugged in and active, 24/7. Kinda like auto pilot in a plane. You just gotta let go of the controls, go with God the ultimate computor programmer.

Christianity is the first urban religion. All other religions were limited to specific social and ethnic groups and their historical roots were in a specific geographical location where their adherents lived. But Christianity 'took off' in Rome (known by the Romans as just 'the city'). It welcomed people regardless of where they had been born and the enthic or social group they had been born into.
This is pretty revolutionary when you think about it.
And still is.

Once again, thanks so much for taking the trouble to put your sermon on the e-church website for us.

The Word of the Lord is wonderfully refreshing, life giving & comforting - even if it does gently push us out of our comfort zones.

Leonard Sweet uses this picture as a background on his computer. His reflection on it was that van Gogh painted the church as one without a door. indeed it is a challkange to us.

Ruth you may be onto something. Even though van Gogh was 'saying' it was the church that had lost the light such an attitude can just as easily be attributed to what was going on in his own life.

I like your description of 'emotionally gasping ... darkness creeping in -encroaching, suffocating ...'

As for the painting.... I wonder if van Gogh was depicting that the light had been snuffed from his heart, through trials that he had gone through. Light bulbs that need replacing but no money - no interest - not ready - too hurt. For candles to glow there needs to be oxygen, and if he was emotionally gasping maybe this was showing the darkness that was creeping in -encroaching, sufficating.....

I would love to see the window guards come off the stained glass and the stained glass back light so that at night the windows glow with colour. But I realise that the guards are for protection. I also see a large flat space above the windows, that overlooks the flats, a combination of light, signage and general interest would be more inviting. Something that captures attention, creating wonder and thought in a passerbys heart.
